't IJ Funenkade 7 (622 83 25). Tasting
house on the premises of beer brewery 't IJ, which is housed in an old windmill.
The small and independent IJ brews about ten beers, all of which are on
tap in this somewhat noisy and smoky 'Proeflokaal' . A favourite among locals,
't IJ is always crowded, especially on sunny days when it's a pleasure to
sit outside. You can tour the brewery each Friday at 4pm.Open daily 3pm-8pm. Blarney
StoneNieuwendijk 29 (623 38 30). Lively Irish bar in the city centre. Wood floor covered with fresh sand, and decorated with photographs of Irish landscapes and famous countrymen. Pool table and occasional live music. Open daily 10am-1am (3am weekends). Cafe Cuba Nieuwmarkt
3 (627 49 19). Done up in fifties Havana style with Hemingway pictures, rum adverts and cane furniture. Famous for its large selection of cocktails, at reasonable prices. Large outdoor terrace during summer, with a nice view of the hustle and bustle on Nieuwmarkt square. Open 1pm-1am (3am weekends). East Of Eden Linnaeusstraat 11 (665 07 43). True to its name, East of Eden has a distinct tropical flavor to it: yellowish walls, cane furniture, painted elephants behind the bar, and lots of light through the high windows. It has a large terrace with a good view of the nearby Tropical Museum. East of Eden attracts a mixed crowd of locals and, during the day, visitors of the museum.Open 11am-1am (3am weekends). Gollem Raamsteeg 4 (06 4 675 01 55). The first bar in Amsterdam to serve imported beers, nowadays stocks over 200 bottled beers, including the famous Westvleteren Trappist! Most of the beers are served in their own special glass. A list of all beers served, with a short description of each beer, is available in Dutch as well as in English. Very popular and very crowded.Open 4pm-1am (2am weekends). Sound Garden Marnixstraat 164-166 (620 28 53). This bar was named after the Seattle band, but indeed has a very nice garden as well. Alternative sounds with a crowd to match, and lots of games: pool, darts, pinball, chess, backgammon to name a few. 89 (427 46 57). Large 'Oirish' pub, with three separate bars, a few pool tables, and screens with the Irish (and English) football of course. DJ's during the weekend. Substantial Irish breakfast, which might be a good idea if you plan on spending part of your day here. Open 11am-1am [3am weekends]. |
