Amsterdam Watertorenplein 6 (682 26 66). Amsterdam
is a very large restaurant (275 seats), with an extensive and varied menu
at moderate prices, and efficient service by waiters clad in traditional
black and white. The building used to house the pumping station for the
nearby water tower, and a lot of the machinery has been left untouched;
the interior even includes one of the original pumping engines. With high
ceilings, thick walls and the black-and-white color scheme, the decor is
impressive. Amsterdam is extremely 'kids-friendly', so expect a little noise.
Reservations necessary during weekends.Open 11am-1am (2am weekends). Kitchen 11.30am-11.30pm. |
| Balthazar's
Keuken Elandsgracht 108 (420 21 14). Excellent
Mediterranean cooking with a touch of the Orient in this popular and lively
place in the middle of the Jordaan. The
small and narrow Balthazar's is dominated by its open kitchen (keuken),
which contributes to the bustling atmosphere. No carte, just one fixed three-course
menu. Reservations recommended.Open Wed-Sat 6pm-midnight. |

Bazar Albert Cuypstraat 182 (675 05 44).
This really huge restaurant is located right in the bustling center of Pijp neighborhood, on the lively Albert Cuyp day-market. Bazar houses in a former church - hence the large angel above the entrance - that has been done up in tasteful Arabic kitsch. Menu to match with couscous, kebabs, aubergine and the like, at moderate prices. A minor complaint: due to the sheer size of the place the acoustics are not that great.Open daily 11am-1pm, weekends 9am-1pm. Bern Nieuwmarkt
9 (622 00 34). A traditional 'brown' bar-restaurant which surprisingly is very popular with a slightly alternative crowd. Famous for its Swiss cheese fondue, a real bargain. Bern has a terrace with a good view of the Nieuwmarkt. No music. Open 4pm-1am (3am weekends). Kitchen 6pm-11pm. |
De Bolhoed Prinsengracht
60 (626 18 03). Amsterdam's most famous vegetarian/vegan restaurant, with a canalside terrace. Caters mainly to the mellow subcultures, but has none of the stuffy atmosphere of the old-style veggie restaurant. Open daily noon-11pm (12pm Sat). Burger's Patio 2e Tuindwarsstraat 12 (623 68 54). A large and very popular Jordaan eaterie, featuring an Italian menu (Burger was the name of the butcher from whom the property was bought). Indeed there's a large patio, with a fountain. Open 6pm-1am (kitchen closes at 11pm). Cafe Brix Wolvenstraat 16 (639 03 51). Laidback bar-restaurant with a starters only menu. DJ's and live jazz on Thursday, Friday and Monday. Perfect for a leisurely evening with good friends. Spirits are sold by the bottle, and they will keep your unfinished bottle for later use. Nice sidewalk terrace during summer. Open daily 4-11pm (2-12pm weekend). |
